Street Fighter EX is a head-to-head fighting game with 3D graphics, originally released as a coin-operated arcade game for the Sony ZN hardware in 1996. The EX stands for exquisite. It is a spin-off of the Street_Fighter series co-produced by Capcom with Arika and was the first game in the series to feature polygon graphics. A 3D visual style would not be used again in a Street Fighter game until Street Fighter 4. Alongside the iconic Street Fighter characters, many characters unique to this sub series were introduced. Although some of the original characters have become popular in their own right, they have not appeared in subsequent Street Fighter games due to Arika owning the rights to them. Furthermore, the games are not considered part of the Street Fighter canon. It was followed by an updated arcade version titled Street Fighter EX Plus, as well as a PlayStation-exclusive home version titled Street Fighter EX Plus α, both released in 1997. Street Fighter Ex 3, which added tag team combat, was the last Street Fighter EX games.
After being dormant for over a decade, the series was revived by Arika with as Fighting Layer EX, which brings back many of the Street Fighter EX original characters while omitting the Street Fighter roster.
