A popular lighthearted moe military/sports action comedy franchise that began as an anime TV series animated by Actas. The TV series ran from October 2, 2012 to March 25, 2013. It was directed by Mizushima Tzutomu and written by Yoshida Reiko. The characters are designed by Shimada_Humikane, an artist known for working on similarly themed military works starring cute female cast, and Nogami_Takeshi. After the TV series' conclusion, the franchise continued as feature length theatrical films reuniting the cast and crew. It also spawned a prequel manga titled Girls_Und_Panzer_Little_Army and various manga spinoffs. The anime blends 2d and 3d animation, with the tanks being animated in the latter. Besides going into detail on how tanks work, the series features many historical allusions and in-jokes, usually related to World War II, with the schools being based off of the nations that participated in said war.
The franchise is set in a world where Senshadou, the way of the tank, has become the most respected and valued martial art/sport for girls. Girls from various schools around the world compete against each other in non-lethal tank battles, using World War II era tanks. Yet in spite of the widespread popularity of the sport, protagonist Nishizumi Miho wants nothing to do with it, making the decision to transfer to Ouarai Girls High School because it no longer has a Senshadou program. Once there, she befriends Takebe Saori and Isuzu Hana and seems set to enjoy a comparatively normal high school life, which she gets to have only briefly, because soon after Miho arrives, the student council president Kadotani Anzu announces that she is reviving the school's long dead Senshadou program, and she insists that Miho be a part of it because Miho is from the legendary Nishizumi family of Senshadou practitioners and the school needs someone of her expertise in order to win the upcoming Senshadou tournament. Miho, having become disillusioned with the art due to her discomfort with her family's style, is initially reluctant, but decides to return to the sport thanks to the support of her newfound friends. But she and Ouarai are soon faced with an incredibly difficult task: they must find a way to win the tournament and defeat much stronger and better funded schools despite having, excluding Miho, a team of students who are complete newbies at Senshadou using tanks that aren't in the best condition.
The series largely takes place in a fictionalized version of the real life town Ouarai in Ibaraki Prefecture. The immense success of the series led to the town receiving a massive tourist boom and events related to the anime are held there.
The series is also known for its frequent cross promotion and crossover appeal with the online game World of Tanks, which can be modded to feature Girls Und Panzer related material.
The series' soundtrack is a mixture of real life marches taken from the nations featured in the series, and original marches composed by Hamaguchi Shirou.
